Overview
The Sustainable Technology team is looking for a Software Engineer II to help build and maintain Mastercard's sustainability data ecosystem. This role supports Mastercard's Sustainable Impact goals by enabling visibility into energy consumption and emissions across the technology stack, with a focus on Scope 2 and 3 emissions reduction. The ideal candidate is passionate about sustainability, data-driven engineering, and collaborative problem-solving across functional teams.

Role
In this role, you will:
• Develop, test, and deploy software components that support sustainability-focused data systems.
• Build and maintain data pipelines for tracking and reducing Scope 2 and 3 emissions across environments, platforms, infrastructure, and applications.
• Develop robust data pipelines, APIs, and backend services to support structured and unstructured data ecosystems (e.g., SQL data lakes, Splunk, SharePoint, Power Apps).
• Engineer technical data solutions to support activity-based carbon accounting and emissions forecasting across Scope 2 and Scope 3 domains.
• Ensure data integrity, system reliability, and performance optimization across distributed systems.
• Advance Mastercard's sustainability data lake and analytics capabilities to deliver actionable insights across cloud, AI, software/web, and infrastructure.
• Collaborate across technology teams to advance data model maturity to enable actionable insights across functional stakeholder groups across the technology stack.
• Participate in team prioritization discussions with product and business stakeholders.
• Troubleshoot and refactor existing data models and pipelines to improve performance and maintainability.
• Assist in documenting APIs and services related to sustainability data.

All About You
The ideal candidate for this position should:
• Be comfortable owning data model engineering delivery tasks at the application or component level.
• Demonstrate curiosity and initiative in learning new languages and architecture patterns.
• Demonstrate advanced proficiency in backend engineering, data modeling, and distributed systems architecture.
• Be skilled in building scalable data pipelines and APIs using modern frameworks and cloud-native technologies.
• Have experience working with SQL-based data warehouses and unstructured data platforms (e.g., Splunk).
• Have experience in sustainability and data-driven decision-making, with a strong understanding of carbon accounting principles and technology-related emissions.
• Ability to perform as a self-starter, developing and delivering end-to-end solutions with autonomy.
• Have experience in building and maintaining data models aggregating environment, platform, infrastructure, and application related performance and efficiency metrics.
• Be a collaborative team member who contributes to technical discussions and supports peers.
• Show interest in sustainability and data-driven impact.
• Be able to communicate technical concepts clearly and contribute to documentation efforts.
• Participate in engineering community initiatives and share best practices.
